PERSONAL INFORMATION PROTECTION OF PRIVACY ACT

On April 1, 2023 the Personal Information Protection Act [PIPA] came into effect for all Alberta Schools. Under this legislation, schoolswill continue to gather student information [allowed under the Education Act] and must indicate to parents how the information willbe used. The purpose of this notice is to inform you of the uses of student information collected by Harvest Baptist Academy andHarvest Christian Home School.
The following items describe activities where student information may be used and such uses [as legislated by the PIPA Act].
NOTICE OF ACTIVITIES
● students’ names, photos and comments may be included in the school calendar, yearbook, or newsletter..
● individual, class or team photos may be taken and used within the school for identification.
● students’ names may be included on artwork or other materials displayed at school.
● students’ names and parents’/guardians’ telephone numbers may be used to take attendance at school, field trips,
transportation services, emergencies, planning and other school-sponsored activities.
● students’ names, telephone numbers and addresses may be included in school directories.
● students’ names may be included in listings of honour rolls, bus lists, graduations, scholarships, awards or for special
recognition (e.g. birthday) purposes.
● students’ names may be included on class lists posted for class placement.
● students' names and telephone numbers may be provided to classroom parent representatives [e.g. absenteeism
verification, school activities] or for fan-out purposes [e.g. notification of emergency school closures]
● the taking of photos/videos of classroom activities, and their use by the media or other organizations where students are
not interviewed or identified by name or face.
● the use of a student’s name for individual class, club, team and/or group photos/videos/images taken at school-sponsored
activities for display at the school.
● the use of students’ names and academic information necessary for determining eligibility or suitability for provincial,
federal or other types of awards or scholarships in the event the board applies on a student’s behalf.
MEDIA/OUTSIDE ORGANIZATIONS
Where individual students are identified or interviewed by media or outside organizations and the material will be used outside the school, separate and specific consent will be requested of parents. Parents will be contacted before such events taking place.
PUBLIC EVENTS:
Photos and videos of school activities that are open to the general public, may be taken and used for purposes within and outside the school, and are beyond the school board’s mandate.
***All information placed in a student's record will continue to be protected and used in compliance with the PIPA Act***
CONSENT REQUIRED
Throughout the year there may be opportunities for the school to:
